Everyone faces difficult people and adversaries

In the beginning of my career, I used to think that dealing with difficult people was a nuisance that wasted time and energy, and kept me from making progress and getting my job done.

When I learned instead to embrace dealing with difficult people as just a fundamental part of the job, I became much more empowered and learned how to influence them instead of letting them block me or harm me.

This is a very useful webinar to download if you need to:

  • Deal with a difficult person who is driving you crazy
  • Maintain your personal brand and credibility when you an adversary
  • Stay more focused on influence and forward progress vs. defense
  • Navigate tough conversations without them getting emotional
  • Improve the productivity in a difficult relationship

Rewrite the drama

It’s important to face the issue head on. Really think about your difficult person, assess what they are doing, and take it upon yourself to re-write the drama. You need to change the communication habits and interactions if you want to put yourself in a more powerful and influential position.

This webinar covers

How to get your way, and get other out of your way!
In this webinar we discussed how to:

  • Make forward progress despite difficult people blocking or attacking you
  • Focus on outcomes and performance measures to remove opinions and emotions
  • Deal with adversaries who are blocking you, and preserve your reputation
  • Manage disagreements with your boss

Focus on Outcomes and Data

In the webinar I talked about the importance of gathering data, documenting the situation, and being the one to focus the conversation on concrete desired outcomes.

If you do this you can put yourself in a position of much stronger influence and prevent the discussion from being emotional and uncomfortable.

I talked about several specific techniques to do this.

Dealing with adversaries

I talked about dealing with bullies, saboteurs, and adversaries who are attacking you.

It’s important to proactively deal with these people because even if what they are saying is not based in fact, they often get others to listen to them, and that will make your job more difficult.

I gave some specific ideas for changing the conversation with adversaries and changing the balance of power in a difficult relationship to be in your favor.

Preserving your reputation

It’s important to recognize that some adversaries can have a negative impact on your personal brand and credibility.

It’s very important to stay on the high ground, get out of defense mode, and demonstrate consistent positive behaviors that speak louder than your critics.

Influencing a Difficult Boss

At some point in our career, most of us have a boss who is difficult, who we feel does not get us, like us, or support us.

It’s important when you are in this situation to have a plan to maintain your status and your sanity. I talked about how to negotiate with a difficult boss, how to avoid surprises, and how to build broader support (without angering your boss) that will increase your power and relevance independent of your boss.
