May I also recommend an often-overlooked aspect of delegation ... providing the opportunity for the delegate to practice or rehearse before actual performance. 

This is crucial, of course, in fields such as surgery and piloting jet aircraft. In business, it usually expedites the learning curve and heads off the fear of failure.
