One other thing i have noticed, is that the act of recognizing a star who might not have the exact experience on the job description, is something that is very hard for many people. I am starting to believe that stars might find it easier to recognize star potential than others.

I love this article. So often hiring managers either hire people exactly like themselves or someone with exactly all the qualifications required and that gives the person hired no opportunity for growth.

I have been fortunate that I have been hired by those who looked at me holisitically versus just my skills and that has rewarded me with a fun and very diverse career. Wish there were more folks like that around!

Great post -- Wish more hiring managers would heed it!

As a job seeker, I'm always surprised by how focused employers are on finding candidates with prior experience doing exactly what the open position entails. If you don't have that experience -- you won't be considered.

Most famously, there was the GE HR manager who recommended *against* hiring Jack Welch because he didn't have the requisite experience. Fortunately for GE, sharper minds prevailed.
