Patty, I totally agree with this comparison of 'Naughty versus Nice'. Unfortunately, in today's environment, there is another factor that complicates the topic - fear. Fear allows an asshole act openly, and without remorse, justifying his/her actions by the mere fact of 'my way or the highway'...I have also studied different management approaches in my tenure as a manager, individual contributor, and marketer, and in some cultures, which respond to fear better than they respond to praise, trust, and belief. Many executives of international (global) companies actually change their styles with different teams of subordinates, because that's what they understand. In the end, I am a strong believer that being nice wins in the end and 'assholes' do find their destiny eventually. I also believe that the good guys and gals win in the end through broad trusted network of friends and colleagues who will come to the rescue, when the times get tough. What goes around, comes around. Alex.
